Love the French Way: Romantic Valentine's Day Traditions in France

Valentine's Day, or "La Saint-Valentin" as it's known in France, is a cherished occasion celebrated on February 14th. Deeply rooted in French culture, this day is dedicated exclusively to lovers, setting it apart from some other countries where it also encompasses expressions of friendship.

A Brief History of Saint-Valentine

The story began during the third century when the Roman Empire had been at war for years. According to Emperor Claude II potential soldiers were more interested in women and having families than in fighting for the Empire… To solve the problem, the Emperor forbade weddings throughout the Empire.

In secret a priest named Saint Valentine continued to bless marriages and perform wedding ceremonies. Once the Emperor caught wind of this he imprisoned Valentine and he was eventually sentenced to death. According to the legend, right before his execution on the 14th of February 270 AD, he gave sight back to the blind girl. He also gave her a heart-shaped letter, which he signed: “From your Valentine”.

It was not until the Middle Ages that Valentine’s Day became a day to celebrate love

Several heartfelt customs mark modern Valentine's Day in France:

  • Exchange of Cards: Lovers often exchange "cartes de Saint-Valentin" adorned with heartfelt messages and declarations of love.

  • Gifts: Common gifts include flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and lingerie. Many couples also indulge in macarons from renowned patisseries like Ladurée or Pierre Hermé.

  • Romantic Dinners: Couples often enjoy intimate dinners at home by candlelight or book tables at romantic restaurants, many of which offer special Valentine's Day menus.

  • Weekend Getaways: Some couples take the opportunity to book romantic weekend trips, exploring charming destinations within France.

In France, Valentine's Day is a time to celebrate love and passion. It's a day for couples to express their affection through thoughtful gestures, whether it's a handwritten note, a bouquet of roses, or a shared experience that deepens their bond.
